Proverbs 28:27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
John 12:8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Why did Jesus tell us that we would always have the poor with us? Could it be that He wants to give us the opportunity to share our wealth and have compassion on them? I know that I cannot meet the needs of all the poor in this world but I also know that I can help a few with the little that my Lord has given me stewardship of.
Pray about taking up a special offering to help us with the needs of buildings and lands for the struggling congregations in Nigeria. Thank you for your prayers. Editor.

MINISTER’S MEETING REPORT 2006

Theme: “Adjusting To Today’s Culture (Method’s Change – Message Remains)”
35 Ministers, Leaders & Spouses attended the 19th annual Minister’s Meeting for Church of God Ministers held March 1-3 at The Church of God of Cumberland Valley, 611 Shippensburg Rd, Shippensburg, PA. March 1-3, 2006.
The meeting began with Bro. Garry Bates preaching on Cultural Change from Phil 3:7-16. There is a stubborn resistance to change and there are those that change for the sake of change; neither position works. We need new ideas. There is a fear of change. It’s OK to change some things. Post modern Christianity: We need to present a clear witness to our culture. We have Bible believing churches that don’t read the Bible. We need to show the world that Jesus & the Kingdom is worth suffering and sacrificing for. We need to learn to be a little more transparent. We are in rapidly changing cultures – Culture changes every three years. Things used to revolve around the church; now the church is in competition with everything and everybody. The church is struggling to find a voice. Who speaks for the church? How can we find a voice? We’ve got to look for souls, we need a burden. We have different styles and approaches. It’s not about getting people to come to church; it’s about getting them to Jesus. Music is important and very different in different places. What works in one place will not work in some places. Get outside of our four walls. Real Holy Spirit leadership is needed. 1 Cor 9:19-23. Some methods should change and some methods should not change. The pastor is the key; the congregation takes on his personality. Understand our times: lack of commitment, bad priorities, apathy, fast pace, Know where you are at, Know who you are; what God wants you to do in your place.
Thursday morning: Six small groups were formed to discuss eight objectives. The groups were instructed to choose a chairman and recorder and give each member the chance to express their thoughts. The eight objectives were: 1. Are we following the commands of Christ? 2. What ways did the Lord facilitate change? 3. What is or concept of the church? 4. What methods work for you? 5. How do we overcome fear of change (identify fears – what are we afraid of)? 6. What should not change? 7. Consider the importance of leaders’ influence & personality. 8. Solutions to commitment.
Thursday Afternoon: The small groups gave reports to the complete assembly.
Group 1: On Change: Use Wisdom; “Show Me” benefits; We fear unknown (i. e. contemporary church, what other people say); Generational tolerance; Difference in cultural change (divorce, homosexuality) abortion, fornication, addictions, abuse; Focus: Salvation, Understanding – read Bible & prayer, Obedience (partial is disobedience), Teach accountability & commitment; See the problems – separate petty & pertinent; Read, Know & Obey; Acts 5:38-39, Mark 10:14, Matt 19:13-14, 1 Tim 5:17, 1 & 2, Heb 13:17 and James 4:17.
Group 2: Are we willing to follow the commands of Christ? Are we isolationists? Separate but involved; What am I willing to do to see others saved? Do we fear reprisals or compromise or peer pressure or fear of other religions? Peer pressure works on 50 year olds the same as on 15 year olds. Hold on to that which is good; Don’t equate busyness with Godliness; Sacrifice your comfort zone; Time – 70 years – Commitment; Are we afraid of failure? What should not change? Are we afraid of losing the Bible heritage or our heritage? Revivals vs. Spiritual renewal; Make change or stay the same; Will change cause commitment? Follow Christ; Help others; Daily commitment – not just when the doors are open; Am I willing to change and accept change? Ways the Lord facilitated change – effective because He cares; Relevant, interested in others needs; Involved; Improvised – wrote in the sand – used spit; What methods work for you? Go out, be a child of God, personal contact, be distinct, have an identity, be approachable & acceptable, be concerned, meet their needs, be real, take time; Growth isn’t sinful but it can be; People don’t care how much you know – they know how much you care. What is our concept of the church? The Church not our congregation; Bring God with you to the building; Are we missing the big picture? Are we underestimating God?
Group 3: Commitment – Model, Teach, Pray, Discipline, Accountability/ discipleship; How did Christ facilitate change? He was approachable; He prepared them to change; How to overcome fear of change – be exposed, be flexible, accept change; How to overcome our fears – be secure in Christ, know where you are, look into the eyes of God, be perfect in our relationship with God, committed every a.m. & p. m.; deepen our commitment to Christ; world’s concept of the church; be perfect in God’s wisdom.
Group 4: How did Jesus facilitate change? He developed (in His case evidenced) a Godly reputation, John 3:2; He understood the culture; Sought wisdom – James 1:5; Engaged the culture; Involvement – civic organizations / government – taking a stand; He understood people; He knew what needed to be changed; He promoted thought – parables; He made people think “out of the box”; What methods work for you? “Methods are many, principles are few. Methods are always changing, principles never do”; Highways & hedges; Heeding the prodding of the Holy Spirit (a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit).
Group 5: Are we following the commands of Christ? Love God, love neighbor, prayer, go ye therefore, feed my sheep; Ways that Jesus facilitated change – broke mold, denounced tradition, stood against Pharisaical attitude, creative & used current culture, did not allow fear to dictate decisions, went to the people, met both physical & spiritual needs; What’s the concept of the church? God, divine body/holy institution, God is builder, Jesus is cornerstone, redeemed by blood/grace; What methods work for you? Relational ministry, evangelism, create an arena, target youth (church of today), sports, drama, music, Nursery, trained ushers/ greeters; be sensitive to one on one needs, before, during, after; After in the door – discipleship, systematic Bible training, delegate; Evangelism/ visitation team – they are not going to know until you go & show. How do we overcome fear? What are we afraid of? Failure, losing people, displeasing God / fellow Christians, leaving comfort zone, lack of training skills, authority; What should not change – Basic Gospel message, vision, love, commitment, leaders personality / influence, God is the head of the church not the pastor, God’s plan to bring results; Solutions to commitment – prayer, life Bible reading, place value on every parishioner.
Group 6: Are we following God’s commandments? What are God’s commandments? Preach the Gospel, Spirit filled, Feed the flock, Love your enemies, Assembly, commitment, time – length of service – attention span; How do we increase the level of commitment? Place value on product, preach with passion, avoid discouragement; Ways that Christ facilitated change – communication, spoke with authority, kept company with sinners, find common ground, did what was right not what was popular; What should not change – Pulpit belongs to the pastor, noticeable difference Saints & Aint’s. What should change – Church of God is not the only source.
Thursday evening Bro. Tony Bartlette preached on “The Gospel is the Power of God unto Salvation” from Matt 12:43-45.The Gospel will outlast this world. We need to grow the right kind of Christians. The church needs to be forward thinking. All too often it is not relevant to today’s culture. The church has lost her influence. We need to take the Gospel and teach people to understand it. Our nation is rapidly going down. The forces of evil are seven times greater in our nation now than in the early forming of our country. Ungodly behavior is not normal. The greater the night, the greater the light but you have to stand up. Our Mission: 2 Cor 10:3-5; We are called to invade the darkness of men’s minds. God wants the Holy Spirit to manifest himself in our lives. Just so the devil is looking for bodies to express him. The church of God is not a sub-culture; it is a counter culture. Whatever spirit that has a hold of you makes you a walking billboard for it.
Friday Morning: Bro. Bates preached on “Surviving In Our Time” from 1 Cor 2:1-5. We live in a time of transition. We are told that our culture re-invents itself every three years. Our message does not change. It is our job to penetrate the world. This could be the churches finest hour. Phil 3:10: Our survival depends on a relationship with Jesus. Relationships are the only things that you will carry into eternity. Jesus is the bridge that reconnects man with God. We need relationships with each other. Gal 6:10: especially do good to each other. This is the way the world knows we are followers of Jesus. We need each other. We have a responsibility to build relationships with sinners. We need to be relevant; get real, be real to have an impact on the culture of our time. We must have resolve; be determined to be faithful to what the Lord wants you to do. We are engaged in a war. Fight the fight of faith, endure to the end and be courageous.
Cds or Tapes of the evening services may be ordered from The Church of God of Cumberland Valley, 611 Shippensburg Rd., Shippensburg, PA 17257
Topic of Theme for next year’s meeting was ranked in the following order: 1. Discipleship Training/ Disciplining new converts. 2. Evangelism & Discipleship Training 3. Preaching Techniques. 4. Spiritual Growth. 5. Effective church growth – what works? 6. Preaching Doctrines. 7 Pastor’s Spouses Issues. 8. Establish a legal Ministerial Organization. 9. Respite/ How not to burn out.
Evaluations: Nearly all liked the, agenda, fellowship, small groups, topic & meals provided.
Other Comments: The preaching was very good. I liked the organization & the laughter. I didn’t feel there was adequate time to discuss the topics. Good topic but too broad to touch on in a short time. Everything was uplift and it encouraged me & I enjoyed the fellowship. Outlines would be nice. I would’ve liked the opportunity to experience some others in a group setting too. Just not sure we really covered that topic. I think announcements should be made about turning off cell phones; also limit the exiting during the services. I had a great time and was very much encouraged and blessed; thanks for all your efforts. I was discouraged when the speaker for Thursday was not present during the small groups. There is a need stress the importance of this to the speaker in the future. Also need to stress cell phones off during session; they can check during break. I really would like to have seen the evening minister n the afternoon activities. I think the importance of that should be expressed to whoever is chosen to preach. Ask that cell phones be turned off! People can check their voicemails during a break. If a true emergency arises the people can use the church phone. I would like to see more spouses encouraged to come. Maybe have a 3rd day to have the wives together to share with their struggles. It may be a good idea to schedule fellowship time.
The single most important aspect of this time I would mention to encourage others to attend in the future: Sharing positive feed back and camaraderie has been encouraging. Fellowship, Spirit led, Free to be yourself & interject, small groups bring many thoughts = new ideas. Great fellowship, sharing visions. The message of the Church of God is passed on to the next generation. That there always are avenues that pastors can be stirred to continue to press the battle on. Powerful instruction/ teaching from God’s Word. Evening messages. That we need one another so that we can be strengthened in God; to know that we all struggle from time to time and we need to pray for one another. The need for fellowship & for the uniting together to make a difference for Christ. Overall, thank you for the blessing; God is going to do great things. I enjoyed the services and the small groups but the fellowship was wonderful. Fellowship (4). We were challenged and excited from this union of fellowship and spirit filled worship. The genuine demonstration that we need one another. It’s encouraging to know everyone has many of the same questions and ideas.
Next Year’s Meeting is scheduled for Licking County Church of God, Newark, Ohio. Dates to be determined by the meeting committee in July.
The committee for next year is: Chair: Stanley & Martha Rexroth, Advisor: Tom Hannold, Vice Chair: Donald & Denise Curtis; and Karl & Yvonne Lohr.

PHILIPPINES
February 28, 2006
Dear Bro. Rexroth & Saints,
Greetings from the Philippine Mission to all our beloved supporters abroad in Jesus Name.
It’s a privilege again to note some information from the growing mission. By God’s help another work of the Holiness Church of God was born – Siwal, Sultan Kudarat people who came out from Babylon and join the family of God to advertise the nature of their Bamboo chapel they built by their own expenses. Picture enclosed.

Secondly, our Pastoral Training School is going on smoothly. Students were used in the Sunday School Department in the church, preach during our young people services, during Sunday afternoon they’re launching out holding Sunday School extension, evangelism and some are use in nearby churches, so that during Monday morning in their school worship service they are required to report what they have done.
Best wishes to all our beloved supporters.
In God’s Labor

Dear Father & Mother Wood,
It is indeed a great pleasure to submit our report to those that share our burdens for us with much patience and loving kindness. We are your servants to work according to your vision and bring out the good results in every project.
Working in river villages is somewhat difficult for transport and purchasing of materials. But we are sure to say that we can overcome any difficult by your prayers because we already crossed several milestones through your cooperation.
Now we have need to construct two church buildings in river villages. One village, Varagali, was visited by our noble American missionaries in 2005. If it is your will we can provide building to the saints there. The Lord blessed all our missionaries’ efforts and our humble service with new souls. Often the Pentecost Mission people are coming and disturbed the people. The other village where we need to construct the chapel is P. Dibba. Here the people are called by some respect caste, but not high caste. Recently we went to this village and dedicated a small hut for Sunday services. There is no bus transport to this village; only a narrow way about which the people are going.
Fellowship of the church of God had established three congregations in different river villages. The third one, T. Patnam, we had already built a church building by your kind help. The fourth one is Vadde Palem between T. P. Gudur and Nellore. It is six kms. from T. P. Gudur and Nellore. Pastor Martin requested help for a church building in his region. Pastor Premnath requested help to repair his church roof; he said it was damaged by the heavy rains.
It is a immense pleasure that the construction of Webb Mission house is 100% completed. We could built two bedrooms with attached bath rooms and one main hall with kitchen. Electrification work was over. For now we painted with white cem.; later on we can decorate with color paints. We praise God to enabled us completed the house with good comfort and commodies. We can send the pictures soon.
There is much progress in high cast church building construction. We can completed very soon. The building height is 14 feet from the basement. This project is highly estimated. We work very hard to get good elevation and strong foundation. We shall not compromise in any aspect to complete the building. This all done only by your prayers and supporting help. We are indebted for all your kind help.
Your servant,
Bobby

YOUTH CORNER
It is time once again to go down to the corner and see what is happening. I can hardly believe it is March already. As I think of how things are moving along quickly, I am reminded of a story.
There once was a young man who loved the Lord and served him with all he had. He was very active in everything that he thought was involved in serving the Lord. He was always busy, always working for the Lord. One day, however he discovered that he was always working and never spending time with the one he was working for. While all he was doing were good ideas, they were not always God’s ideas. He learned that he had to always take time to be quiet and still and spend time with the Master.
Remember to always take time with God and rest in Him.
Power Verse: Psalms 37:7 “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. ”
Well that is about it for this time. Take care and remember to serve the Lord with all you got!
If you have anything your youth group is doing to spread the love of God, please let me know so we can put it in the corner. Well that’s about it, for now, take care and remember to serve the Lord with all you got!
